Activities

I’m Feeling the Words

What You’ll Need:

Toolkit: Reading Edition 1

Tools: Textured letter set, spelling word list or sight word list (not included in the kit but can be found online by searching for sight word lists)

Why is this activity important?

Practicing spelling skills and integrating the sensory aspect of the textured letters will help make connections in the brain that help you remember how the words are spelled and will then help with the reading of the words as well.

How to play:

  1. Look at the first word on the list you are using and read the word aloud and then spell it out loud as well.

  2. Get the textured letters out and find the letters needed to spell the word and then put them together in the correct order.

  3. Run your finger over the first letter while saying the name of the letter out loud (you may need to hold the card with your other hand to make sure that it stays still while you are doing this activity). Repeat this with each letter in the word.

  4. When you are finished spelling the word while running your fingers over the letters, read the word again.

  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for each word on the list (until you build up some stamina, you can also choose 5 words a day if working through the whole list is too overwhelming).

Challenge:

If you have someone working with you, ask them to say the word to you and see if you can spell it aloud to them before setting the letters out to “touch-spell” the words (you can ask for clues or help if needed).
